Great review by Joe Ospalla of Drumset for Beginners - check it out!

Just to let everyone know that Joe Ospalla of www.JoeTheDrummer.com has written a very thorough, honest and positive review of Drumset for Beginners by Paul Hose and Jim Farey.

Joe's angle is a pro player and teacher who has taught and played internationally and is currently based in the South-East of England. Check his site out and find the review in his blog/news section.

Here are some of our favourite parts, but to read the full review, visit www.JoeTheDrummer.com:

"Drumset For Beginners by Paul Hose & Jim Farey sets out from the very beginning to put the creativity of the student (and necessarily the teacher) at the forefront of the learning process. It is a comprehensive curriculum for taking a person from their first groove to being a well-rounded drummer."

"...working through fundamental concepts of grooves and fills always emphasising the nascent drummer’s creativity in being able to take each lesson and apply one’s own interpretation."

"The lessons in both [Latin and Jazz] chapters offer a fantastic set of fundamentals to get get students familiar with both styles and which will provide a great stylistic and technical underpinning for developing drummers of all varieties."

"All in all, I really like this book and have started using its ideas with my students and am having very positive results. I feel like I have been given a very clear method to explore which differs from my approach in many ways but which has enough flexibility to enable me to try stuff out and see what fits and what doesn’t."

Don't forget to check out the various websites we have at www.DrumsetForBeginners.com and that if you don't have a copy already you can buy the book from the site too.

Huge thanks to Joe from both Paul and I, he really is an asset to our community!

Listmania lists of books and equipment for new and developing drummers by Jim

Just a short note to say that Jim has taken the time to compile a list of "essentials" for the new and advancing drummer. The first list is all the things which a drummer may want other than the drum kit itself whilst the second list is an exhaustive list of the texts referred to in the book Drumset for Beginners by Paul Hose and Jim Farey just so that people can easily look up what these books are about.

Remember, this has ben put together through Amazon's Listmania site, but your high street music store needs your support and can offer you the personal advice that no website can. The lists are not perfect, nor exhaustive. They are just starting points for ideas and discussion.

Enjoy drumming and music.

Last week, this went live on www.MikeDolbear.com, below are just a few snippets. Get over there to check out the complete review plus many more great reviews and features.

"What a book! Crammed full of information, exercises and quality MP3 play-along tracks ‘Drumset For Beginners’ is a new innovative style of book. It is a complete teaching package.

"It takes the form of individual lessons with advice on HOW to teach each exercise. As a teacher I found this very refreshing as we all get stuck in our own ways with how we go about things and this opens your eyes to other methods and techniques! It is split into 4 main chapters – ..."

"The accompanying Mp3CD is rammed packs with tracks for every single exercise in the book plus the four ‘graduation play-alongs’ that are your reward once you get to the end."

"Overall a very good book to learn how to play from scratch and a very useful tool for teachers I can’t think of many others I’d recommend over it.

Chris Persiva"

Remember, Drumset for Beginners (or DS4B as we like to call it) is available here for only £13.95, or from many local dealers and the web.

Rhythm magazine gives Drumset for Beginners 4 star review

Here's a great little review that just went out in Rhythm magazine, which is based in the UK. Thank you Rhythm!

DS4B is available worldwide through Alfred Publishing (UK), visit your local dealer or click here to purchase a copy.

From the July issue of Rhythm:
Drumset for Beginners. Paul Hose & Jim Farey
**** (4/5)

A unique approach to learning drums.

You might be forgiven for assuming that this is another drum book for beginners, and whilst that is the case it's actually really aimed at the person teaching them.

Designed to give a thorough understanding of the essentials, the book guides both student and teacher through a wealth of information from basic beats and fills to jazz, Latin rhythms and chart reading. Throughout, the authors recommend classic drum books that can be used to explore each area further with things concluding with a selection of playalong tracks and charts to put everything into context.

This is a fairly niche area for drum books and one that's not really been explored or catered for, and in this respect it fulfils its objective well whilst perhaps attempting to cover more ground than is important to the average beginner. That said, any teacher that manages to guide their student through the material presented will have set them up with an excellent set of musical skills. (PR)
